Description

1. Introduction

SNDT Women’s University Law School is the law faculty of SNDT Women’s University, one of India’s oldest and most prestigious institutions dedicated exclusively to women’s education. The Law School at Santacruz (Juhu Road), Mumbai, offers comprehensive legal education from undergraduate to doctoral level, emphasising women’s empowerment through legal knowledge, advocacy skills, and professional development.

2. Historical Background

SNDT Women’s University—formally Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University—was established in 1916 by visionary social reformer Maharshi Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve as the first women’s university in India and South-East Asia.

Driven by the motto “An enlightened woman is a source of infinite strength,” the university began with just five women graduates in 1921 and expanded significantly over the century, with campuses in Churchgate, Santacruz (Juhu), and Pune.

The Law School was established later (around 2006–07) to empower women legally and professionally, preparing graduates for careers in advocacy, judiciary, corporate law, government, and research.
